About this piece
The melody comes from the 18th-century French song “Ah! vous dirai-je, maman”. Mozart later wrote a set of variations on it (K. 265).
The English words come from Jane Taylor's poem “The Star” (1806). The same tune is also used for the Alphabet Song and “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep”.
