About this piece
The American songwriter Henry Clay Work wrote this song in 1876. It tells of a clock bought on the morning the grandfather was born, which ticks through his whole life and stops the moment he dies.
The song is said to have given tall longcase clocks their popular name, “grandfather clocks”.
